The Municipalities in Dubai and Sharjah will hold flower and plant exhibitions While the Dubai event begins today to mark the opening of Al Towar Neighbourhood Park, Sharjah's five-day affair starts tomorrow to promote greenery.

The Sharjah exhibition, is part of Afforestation Day activities at Al Majaz Park near Khalid Lagoon.

The exhibition will feature flowers, saplings and garden tools. It is designed to draw the public's attention towards the importance of house gardens and to promote the emirate's efforts to create more greenery.

Besides the exhibition there will be lectures, cultural activities, competitions, entertainment activities and raffles. The municipality will distribute free saplings among visitors.

Meanwhile, Sharjah Municipality has developed four new categories in the Best House Garden Competition. The categories are: best garden layout, diversity of flowers, type of plants and new plants or flowers introduced in the garden. The jury, which has already visited 20 house gardens, is expected to announce the winners soon.

According to the municipality 7.25 square metres of landscaping was done till last year and 15,000 date palms were planted.

In Dubai, Afforestation Week activities began on February 28 and run till March 3, under the theme "Agriculture is Life and Civilisation".

Apart from the flower and plant exhibition, handicraft bazaar, kite-flying zone, tug-of-war and community recreation events will mark the opening of Al Towar Park.

Present at inaugural ceremony will be Qasim Sultan, Director General, Dubai Municipality, Jassim Mohammed bin Darwish, Secretary General, General Secretariat of Municipalities and officials from Emaar.

The games area at the park will feature playing grounds for basketball, football, volleyball and skateboard track.

Emaar recently entered into a partnership with the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG).As part of this strategic alliance, the company will be holding a series of tree planting and recycling campaigns in its Greens residential community this year.

As the sponsor of the Plantation Week celebrations at the park, Emaar will give away a total of 1,000 prizes for sporting events during the celebrations.
