IRBIL, April 14 (KUNA) -- Speaker of the National Council of Kurdistan Adnan Al-Mufti said Friday that there are a number of evidences in Kurdistan to convict the defunct Iraqi regime of executing Al-Anfal operation.
During a council session, Al-Mufti said Kurds should not forget this major crime committed against the Kurdish people, noting that Kurds should inform the generations to come about it and learn lessons from it.
He also demanded a mechanism to provide services for families of the victims and improve their living conditions.
Meanwhile, Member of the Human Rights Committee of the council Mohammad Faraj demanded an apology from the Iraqi government to the Kurdish people. He demanded allocating portion of Iraqi oil revenues to reconstruct areas affected by the operation and compensate families of the victims.
Before the session, a number of Kurdish youths performed a play outside the parliament that reflected on the suffering of Al-Anfal victims and their families, calling on the concerned authorities in the Kurdish council to work on improving living conditions of families of Al-Anfal victims.
A US team specialized in ethnic cleansing visited northern Iraq to collect evidences about Al-Anfal case and other crimes committed by former Iraqi regime in Kurdistan region in order to use these evidences in the trial of Saddam Hussein and his assistants.
The defunct Iraqi regime executed an eight-phase military operation in Kurdistan region in 1988, dubbed Al-Anfal, in which 4,000 villages were demolished and over 182,000 Kurds were killed, made homeless, or forced out of the region.
