ArabFinance: Egypt intends to incorporate the informal waste system into a more formal sector to help maintain its sustainability, according to an official statement.

This came during a virtual meeting between the Minister of Manpower Mohamed Saafan and the Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad on August 12th.

A suitable job title will be selected for those informal waste pickers, who will be granted a work permit.

Saafan urged for offering a life insurance document that can reach EGP 250,000 per each waste collector for the cases of disability or death.

These efforts come as part of President Abdel Fattah el Sisi’s directives to support the irregular workers both socially and medically.

Egypt’s Minister of Planning and Economic Development Hala el Said announced last month that a total of 2.6 million day laborers were eligible for the three-month exceptional grant.
