DUBAI, 13th August, 2013 (WAM)--Dubai Public Library (DPL), owned and managed by the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the Emirate?s dedicated Authority for culture, arts and heritage, is set to mark its Golden Anniversary.
In 1963, the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum launched the Emirate?s first public library in the homely area of Al Ras. His vision was to create a platform that could serve as the cornerstone for community members to meet and exchange ideas. Fifty years and eight public libraries later, the (DPL), has achieved the vision of the late Sheikh Rashid. Dubai Culture will pay homage to the vision of Sheikh Rashid and celebrate the achievements of Dubai Public Library with a spectacular repertoire of activities that will bring together community members and cultural organisations from across the city. Coinciding with Dubai?s ambitious bid for the World Expo 2020, the celebrations will culminate with a colourful ceremony along the shores of the Shindagah Historical Neighbourhood, opposite the Dubai Public Library in Al Ras. H. H. Sheikh Majid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said: "The Golden Anniversary celebrations of Dubai Public Library is a proud moment for Dubai, as it underlines the compelling vision and foresight of our leadership. Sheikh Rashid envisioned the importance of a public library as a venue to foster community spirit and demonstrate the importance of reading with the founding of the library. Since then, Dubai Public Library has grown under the guidance and visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, thus setting a strong platform for driving the growth of Dubai?s literary and cultural scene."He added: "Dubai Public Library has always played an integral role in serving as creative spaces for the community, where intercultural dialogue and knowledge exchange are encouraged. Fifty years after their inception, they continue to remain the definitive meeting ground for members of the community and an incubator for information.
