Individual investors have pumped in Dh8 billion in 20 new hotels that are under construction in Dubai, said Khalid A. bin Sulayem, director general of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM).

These will add more attractions to the 272 existing hotels in the city's hospitality industry with a capacity of 23,170 room nights.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, president of the Dubai Civil Aviation and chairman of Emirates, yesterday officially opened two trade exhibitions the Hotel Show and Office Exhibition at Airport Expo Dubai.

About 199 exhibitors from 24 countries are displaying a huge range of products and services vital to the day-to-day running of any hotel.

The hotel supply sector is expected to benefit from the exhibition which showcases a wide range of products and services including air conditioning, audio visual, video conferencing and sound systems, bathroom supplies and bed linen, building materials, cutlery and crockery, carpeting and curtains, computer hardware and software, fitness, spa and pool equipment, buses, vans and limousines, landscaping services, management and reservations systems, telecommunications systems, uniforms, and other products and services vital to a hotel's day-to-day operations.

Many of the products on display are being given their Middle East debut.

UAE-based Key Information Technology, for instance, is showing MICROS-Fidelio Financials, described as the definitive financial management system for major hotels, restaurants and other hospitality organisations.

Joanne Evans, director of Streamline Marketing, said: "With so many new hotel properties under development across the Middle East, there is tremendous additional business potential for the exhibitors who have travelled here this week from across the region, and around the world.

"We have a huge range of products and services assembled under one roof, and the hotel owners and major hotel operators greatly appreciate the chance to view some of the latest developments for the hospitality business, particularly in the IT field."

The Office Exhibition, meanwhile, offers an insight into the latest developments in the office supply sector which is expanding.

A number of companies are showcasing new techniques and products related to office furniture at the event.

Herman Miller, represented by H20 Concepts of Dubai, launched Mirra, a work chair combining ergonomic comfort, performance, aesthetics, environmental sustainability, and cost efficiency.

Gulf Commercial Group is launching a new range of furniture by Global Contract from Canada. The award-winning Zooey chair, created by world-renowned designer, Zooey Chu, includes a high performance 'skeletal' system, which has synchronised mechanisms to ensure the correct posture.

The half-moon shaped Silencio chair by Germany's Interstuhl received its premiere in the Middle East at the Al Reyami stand. The chair is an individual office, with points to plug in a laptop, lighting and sound proofing to allow privacy in public areas such as airport lounges and reception areas.

Both exhibitions are open from 11am to 7pm every day.
