MUSCAT: Thousands of demonstrators, who have continued their protest in Sohar, Sur and Salalah, celebrated the Cabinet reshuffle and changes made in the ministerial posts by Royal Decrees, yesterday.
They distributed traditional sweets and halwa and slaughtered livestock to express their happiness and joy.
In Salalah, hundreds of people, who have been demonstrating on the seventh day of the protests in front of the Dhofar Governor's office, hailed the Royal Decrees and thanked His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said for fulfilling one of their demands. They termed the changes the "new beginning in Oman".
Earlier in the day, human rights activists, writers and thinkers also participated in the protest and called for the independence of the judiciary.
In Sur, protestors gathered in front of the wali's office to express their happiness and distributed traditional meals and sweets to passersby. Some of the protestors also slaughtered livestock to express their joy.
Hardships
In the Wilayat of Mudhaibi, hundreds of protestors flocked to the office of the wali in the afternoon and demanded improvement in the standards of living, increase in salaries and housing loans. They also called for establishment of a "marriage fund".
Meanwhile, the people in Sohar faced hard times while commuting to their offices. Due to the closure of the Globe Roundabout, people were forced to use the Al Waqaiba Roundabout that resulted in long and heavy traffic jams.
At the Sohar Port, the employees threatened to close down the port's entrance from today if their demand of increment in salaries is not met. Saif Al Wishahi, a teacher, said, "The wilayat is witnessing an unusual situation", adding that due to the protests students are not being able to reach their schools and a very thin attendance was reported at most schools.
Al Wishahi said many events which were supposed to be organised at several government institutions have also been postponed or cancelled due to the ongoing protests. Sheikhs, dignitaries and elders said that they would meet the demonstrators and urge them to call off their protest as His Majesty the Sultan is fulfilling their demands. They said they will also offer them some incentives.
