MUSCAT -- The doctrine 'let the consumer be beware' is apt in the modern times and the Omani consumers are more rational and informed unlike in the past, says the Board member of the Oman Association for Consumer Protection (OACP).

"Omani consumers have come a long way and are more informed, educated and rational compared to the scenario prevalent until recent times", Saleh Mahmood al Zadjali, Board Member, OACP said.

Speaking to the Observer on the sidelines of the 2nd Arab Regional Conference of the International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE) held in association with the OACP, Saleh said consumers are increasingly becoming aware of their rights and responsibilities as a customer and that volunteers can impact a difference to the society no matter where they are from.

"I, as the Board member of the one-decade-old OACP, understand that the modern consumers are more and more getting educated of their rights and responsibilities as the beneficiary of the goods and services for which they are paying and the volunteers from different walks of life can induce a visible change to the society".

The Oman Association for Consumer Protection (OACP) is registered under Ministry of Social Development with aims and objectives that pivot around educating and informing the consumers on a regular basis, conduct researches and studies, and carry out health control and inspection programmes.

As to the volunteering in consumer education and awareness, Saleh said: "OACP is one of the most active NGOs in Oman and has worked for many years to foster a culture of volunteering in the country and this is not the first collaboration between IAVE and OACP in Oman".

Besides that, the OACP has conducted workshops in Muscat in June and October 2009 with the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) in co-operation with IAVE on volunteer recruitment, management, training, evaluation, and recognition to leaders of volunteer organisations.
