Unknown gunmen shot dead the commander of Libya's military police force colonel Ahmed al-Barghathi as he left his house in the eastern city of Benghazi to attend Friday prayers.

The media office of the Chiefs of Staff of the Libyan army confirmed the sad news in a statement published on its facebook site sending its condolences to the dead officer?s family.

He was shot several times and was taken to Al-Jala hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Benghazi in the restive east of the OPEC producer has been hit by a wave of violence by armed groups and radical groups.

On October 13 another military officer, Lieutenant colonial Abdulfattah Rayani, was assassinated in the morning.

The assailants shot him as was driving his car in his way to work.
