The Algerian unit of Coca Cola sold 100 million bottles and cans of soda in 2003, according to Sofiane Gordah, a company executive in charge of North Africa. Introduced in 1990 in the Algerian market by the private firm Fruital, Coca Cola managed to become one of the leaders of the beverage market in the North African country, a market where some 462 beverage producers compete for visibility.
The biggest competitor of Coca Cola in Algeria is the long-established Hamoud Boualem. This brand is well-entrenched in many regions in the country, particularly in the central provinces. To challenge its competitors, Coca Cola will soon introduce new products in Algeria, most likely during this summer.
Outside of Algeria and in the Maghreb, Coca Cola is present in Tunisia through the local bottler Socit Frigorifique et Brasserie de Tunis (SFBT), which has nine bottling plants in the country.
In Morocco it is active through seven franchises and five bottling plants. Coca Cola entered the Maghreb market in the second world war when it set up its first production plant in Tunisia in 1949.
