Muscat - Carillion Alawi has been awarded a £92mn contract by Oman Hospitality Co (OHC) to build the Kempinski Wave Hotel in Muscat.

The 24-month contract, which is to start this month, involves the construction of a beachfront resort including a 309-room five-star hotel and 77 hotel apartments, to be operated by Kempinski Hotels, Carillion said in a statement on its website on Thursday.

The resort, on an approximately 40,000m2 plot, will be built to a maximum five-storey height, including basement car parking.

In December last year, OHC signed a sale-and-development agreement with The Wave, Muscat, to develop the five-star Kempinski Wave Hotel and apartments, the first of four upcoming hotel developments at The Wave, Muscat.

OHC was established in September 2012 with the objective of developing hospitality related projects in Oman. Its shareholders, including Oman-Brunei Investment Co (OBIC), National Investment Funds Co (Nifco) and several Omani pension funds, are focused on developing projects that will support the sultanate's objective of developing the tourism sector.

Carillion Alawi has previously delivered projects worth £75mn for The Wave, Muscat development. Commenting on the award, Carillion chief executive Richard Howson said, "We are delighted to have been selected to deliver this contract, which follows a number of significant recent contract wins in Oman and reflects Carillion Alawi's reputation for delivering high-quality projects. We look forward to continuing the strong relationship we have already established with Oman Hospitality Co and to working together to deliver this prestigious hotel."
