KUWAIT -- The British 'HMS St Albans' sailed from Kuwait City after a welcome, but busy, three-day visit between patrols, said the UK Embassy in a statement on Thursday.

"This was very much an operational visit and the ship was used as a platform for a UK capability demonstration by British owned companies for Kuwait Coast Guard," it said.

It noted that the ship's company were "made to feel most welcome" for the duration of the stay and that "with the UK enjoying close ties with Kuwait, it was an ideal opportunity to further strengthen those ties." HMS St Albans acted as the venue for an evening reception and a capability demonstration of some of the companies' wares. A number of senior delegates attended the events including the British Ambassador to Kuwait and Commodore of Britannia Royal Naval College.

There were five companies with equipment ranging from surveillance radar and electro-optic sensor systems to commercial and military hovercraft, as well as subsea instrumentation.

Away from the ship there was the opportunity to enjoy some sport and to explore the local area. "Many members of the ship's company were delighted to take part in a number of sporting fixtures including netball, football, and rugby. After these hard fought games, there was also time for a game of golf, hash running, and for three of the ship's football coaches to deliver some football coaching for local Kuwaiti children." Commander Adrian Pierce, Commanding Officer said, "We can look back at a very busy but enjoyable stay, where we experienced at first-hand, the renowned warm and friendly reception from the people of Kuwait.

It was a fantastic opportunity to further UK-Kuwaiti relations while showing off some of the cutting edge technologies onboard one of the Royal Navy's most modern and capable warships." HMS St Albans is now back at sea on patrol. The Portsmouth based type 23 frigate is conducting a six-month operational tour of the Middle East, including the Gulf, where she is a key coalition asset conducting Maritime Security Operations.
