Tamkeen Centre recently organised a braille typing workshop for braille typing specialists from the GCC.
The workshop came as part of Tamkeen's efforts to offer training programmes for those who work with visually impaired people. The workshop was held in collaboration with Braille House and Ramada Hotel Dubai.
In the workshop, various issues including the introduction of pointed drawings in school books, mechanism of braille drawn maps in addition to typing techniques and the adaptation of the Arabic language to suit braille conversion programmes were discussed by specialists.
Awatef Akbari, head of training at Tamkeen Centre, said: "The workshop was part of our efforts in providing leading services to people with vision impairments.
"We focused on braille typing as a response to the growing need to train specialists on braille typing operations. This workshop had a positive impact on braille publications, especially school and educational publications." "Tamkeen's priority is to empower vision impaired people. In our efforts to achieve this goal, we work closely with different community sectors and agencies," he added.
Tamkeen provides facilities to vision impaired people aiming to empower them to optimise their independence and enhance the quality of their lives. Additionally, Tamkeen offers training, support, counselling and consultations to many organisations to create meaningful job opportunities for the visually impaired in the UAE.
Tamkeen also focuses on creating better awareness of the abilities of the visually impaired within the community, in order to provide better levels of cooperation between the two.
Tamkeen is a non-profit centre under the royal patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum,Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and supported by Knowledge Village and the British Council.
It aims to empower visually impaired individuals in the UAE through providing training, support, and counselling.
