MUSCAT: The plans to build Al Duqm airport is gaining momentum with the Tender Board yesterday inviting construction firms to build a terminal building.

The Tender Board has invited local and international construction firms to design and construct the terminal building, which will have a capacity to handle 500,000 passengers per annum.

This is part of a major government initiative to build four regional airports, including Sohar, Ras Al Hadd and Adam, to meet the increasing travel demand of tourists, businessmen and local community. The Ministry of Transport and Communications is overseeing the development of new regional airports.

The tender documents for Duqm airport terminal building project will be distributed till February 2, while the last date of submission is on March 7.

Landside civil works for the airport is also progressing and financial tender analysis is going on for the airside civil work package. The gross floor area of the airport is envisaged at 13,350 square metres, with a parking facility for 300 cars.

Further, the runway length is envisaged at 4km, while the airport will have a cargo terminal building with a capacity to handle 50,000 tonnes and an in-flight catering building with a capacity to handle 700 meals per day.

When operational, the Duqm airport will serve as a new gateway into a region with significant economic, industrial and commercial potential.

Ras Al Hadd, Adam airports

A senior official of the Ministry of Transport and Communications earlier said the construction of four regional airports is progressing as per schedule, with the remaining packages reaching different stages of design and tendering.

Recently, Tender Board had floated two separate tenders for contracting firms to pre-qualify themselves for participating in contracts to design and construct terminal buildings for Ras Al Hadd and Adam airports.

Ras Al Hadd will have a capacity to handle 500,000 passengers per annum, while Adam airport will be able to handle 250,000 passengers per annum. Construction work is progressing for airside work for Ras al Hadd, after completing civil works. The whole project include construction of a four kilometer-long runway, taxiways and air navigation and meteorology system.

Similarly, majority of work of Adam airport, except the terminal building, is also complete. In fact, Adam airport has partially started operation with an inaugural VVIP flight from Muscat recently landing at the airport.

Although VVIP flights are flying in Muscat-Adam sector depending on the requirement, the airport will open for scheduled commercial flights only by end-2012, with the completion of a terminal building, according to sources at Oman Airports Management Company.
