The Bahrain distributor of Bausch & Lomb manufactured ReNu with MoistureLoc, a solution for use by contact lens wearers, yesterday said the 'caution' by the manufacturer was only for products manufactured in the US, none of which are available in Bahrain.

"The stock in the Middle East, including Bahrain, is manufactured in Italy and there is no proof whatsoever of the 'Made in Italy' product having any adverse impact on the users," Massimo Fanton, general manager, Bahrain Optician Co. Ltd., told the Press yesterday.

Fanton said the US shipments of the multi-purpose solution produced at Greenville, S.C. manufacturing facility had been withdrawn from the shelves, pending investigation of reports of fusarium infections among contact lens wearers.

"Bausch & Lomb has announced that it has temporarily suspended shipments in the US of ReNu with MoistureLoc Multi-Purpose Solution produced at its Greenville, South Carolina manufacturing facility.

"The suspension is in order to facilitate investigation of reports of fungal keratitis infections among contact lens wearers in the US. ReNu multi-purpose solutions products manufactured at the US facility are not distributed within Europe, Middle East and Africa. All ReNu multi-purpose solutions, including ReNu with MoistureLoc, sold in Europe, Middle East and Africa, are manufactured by Bausch & Lomb at its facility in Milan, Italy."

He said Bausch & Lomb had been working with the US Food and Drug Administration and the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention to investigate the cases of fungal keratitis. Although the FDA has said there was no direct causal relationship between any particular product and the infections, Bausch & Lomb has decided to voluntarily suspend sales of ReNu with MoistureLoc in the US as a precautionary measure while the cause of the incidence is determined.

"There are no plans to suspend sales of ReNu solutions in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region. "The health and safety of our customers is our primary concern. No scientific data exists to suggest a casual relationship between any Bausch & Lomb products and the incidences reported. No unusual trends of fungal keratitis have been reported within Europe, Africa and the Middle East," he said.
