An agreement was signed yesterday between Bapco and the Bahrain International Circuit for a three-year sponsorship of Formula 1.
The agreement was signed by the Chairman of the BIC and President of the General Organisation for Youth and Sports, Shaikh Fawaz bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, and Bapcos board member, Mohammed Salih Al Shaikh Ali.
Mohammed said that the agreement was in line with Bapcos keenness to support the project that was hosted by Bahrain the only country in the Middle East to do so.
The circuit will make the Kingdom one of the main centres to host motor sports, particularly Formula 1 that will be held in April next year, he said.
Mohammed said that the event would strengthen promote the Kingdoms pioneering position as a tourist attraction and boost its economy.
Based on the agreement, the sponsorship will be from 2004 to 2006 during which Bapcos name and logo will be used for a number of sports activities and one of the circuit's tracks will be named after the company, Mohammed said.
Shaikh Fawaz expressed his thanks and appreciation to the Minister of Oil and Chairman of Bapco, Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, and board members for the sponsorship.
He said that the sponsorship affirmed the support to the sport from the private sector.
Shaikh Fawaz praised the initiative of Bapco, he said, was a national company that was considered the first to sponsor the circuit.
There are many other national companies that will soon sign sponsorship agreements that will be announced in the coming days, he said.
Present at the signing ceremony were the Assistant Undersecretary for Oil Affairs, Shaikh Tariq bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, Bapcos Marketing Manager, Adel Al Moayyed, and the General Manager of Administrative Services, Abdulrahman Kamal.
