BabyGap has recalled a set of infant swimsuits in line with a global product recall prompted by a possible strangulation hazard.

A statement from the brand's UAE franchisee, the Al Tayer Group, said it was voluntarily recalling all units of its Marrakesh style, number 706260.

The recall impacts only one style of swimsuit from babyGap in sizes 0-24 months. A limited quantity of 11 units of the swimsuit were sold in the UAE through the Gap store located at The Dubai Mall, the statement said.

Consumers are asked to stop using the recalled product immediately and return it to any GapKids or Gap store for a full refund as well as 25 per cent off any one regular priced item.

An Al?Tayer spokesperson said in an email to Emirates Business that efforts were being made to contact all those customers whose details were on file.

In a joint release with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission last week, Gap said two consumer complaints had been received though no injuries have been reported. It said the swimsuits pose a strangulation risk because they have halter straps that were made too short, causing the plastic ring at the neck of the suit to press against the child's throat, which could obstruct breathing.

Nearly 7,000 of the suits were sold across Canada and the United States.
