BEIRUT (Zawya Dow Jones)--French engineering company Alstom SA (1022047.FR) is leading a consortium that Thursday signed a EUR356 million contract with Algerian tramway operator Entreprise Metro d'Alger, London-based newspaper Asharq Al Awsat reported Friday.

The report, which cited company officials, said Alstom's share of the deal is worth about EUR282 million.

The contract is for the construction of the first tramway project in Algeria, in a 16.3-kilometer line with 30 stations serving more than 150,000 passengers daily.

The tramway is scheduled to be operational in early 2009.
