The recently-formed United Filipino Sports and Culture Association (UFSCA) will be organising the All-Filipino basketball tournament and a women's volleyball tournament from Friday onwards at the Al Jazira Club here.

Consul Renato Villa of the Philippines said the Embassy was always willing to extend held and support for such community activities. "We hope the weekends will provide some good and exciting action when the tournaments are played on Fridays," the Filipino official said.

"The main aim of the UFSCA is to encourage and develop sports among the expatriate community and enable us to create entertainment during the weekends," said event organiser Bernie Cinco.

The All-Filipino Basketball tournament has attracted teams from all over the Emirates. The teams in fray are Sigma Group, Al Dana Dental Clinic, Ex 0-2 Gemaco, Abu Dhabi Health Authority, Wellogic, Gamaco-DHL, Al Haizoom Cargo, Bin Haroon Cargo, Golden Eagle Sports Club, Mindoro Tamaraw, Nissan Al Masaood Automobiles and Buds Pangasinense.

Buddy de Lara, technical director of the basketball tournament, said the event will played on a league-cum-knockout basis. "The teams will be divided into two groups and the league action will extend for nearly five months. The idea is to give all teams more chance through a league system," he said.

The women's volleyball tournament has attracted five teams.

The Abu Dhabi All Stars take on the Red Bats from Sharjah in an exhibition match on the opening day apart from the inaugural match.

Five matches will be played every Friday, starting 10am.
