ALGIERS -- Algerian cost of foodstuffs imports slipped to USD 5.8 billion in 2009 compared with USD 7.8 billion in 2008. A report by the Algerian General Directorate of Customs mentioned that Algerian imports of foodstuffs went down by 25 percent, pointing out that the most prominent imported foodstuffs saw a downtrend like cereals that has its imports cost retreating to USD 2.34 billion, milk derivatives with a bill of USD 862 million and groceries that dipped to USD 256 million.

The reduction in the bill also included coffee, tea at a cost of USD 259 million.

As for bill of the medicine imports it went down by 6.53 percent and at a cost of USD 1.74 billion compared with USD 1.86 billion in 2008, following the success of " Saidal" governmental complex in producing a number of drugs and the Algerian health ministry orientation toward the use of national drugs.
