Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC), the central development arm for the Aqaba Special Economic Zone (ASEZ), supported by the US Trade Development Agency (USTDA) launched last week the first phase of the Port Community Information System (IPCIS) and Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) projects. ADC signed a contract with Global Defence Solutions (GDS) to execute the first phase of the project which involves completing a feasibility study to deliver an IPCIS and VTS for the port of Aqaba. This project aims at increasing Aqaba ports handling c?pacity and promoting trade by facilitating cargo movement, tracking vessels and improving navigational safety in the Gulf of Aqaba.
The objective is to determine the technical requirements of a Port Community System (PCS) as an overarching technology solution where an IPCIS and VTS are interlinked in Aqaba. The PCS acts as an information highway, whereby all users - public and private sectors, gain real-time or near-time access to valuable port information enhancing their daily business output. GDS Chief E?ecutive Officer Michael Goldsmith said: "This project is intended as a cornerstone towards improving trade routes throughout Jordan and its neighbours, establishing Aqaba as one of the leading ports in the region for conducting business in a cost-effective, secure and safe environment."
