Abu Dhabi Island Base Map Project nearing completion

Abu Dhabi The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City announced that it is in the final stage of producing a base map depicting all urban areas within the administrative boundaries of the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City and the Western Region Municipality covering an approximate area of 18,500 square km. The project implementation plan was initiated in January this year after the planning and design stages were completed earlier.

The project is intended to build and update the base map and further extend the geographic range of the spatial database in an endeavour to provide an integrated database and information structure aimed at streamlining planning decision-making related to the development of Abu Dhabi City in line with the Strategic Development Plan Abu Dhabi 2030.

The municipality has accomplished nearly 85 per cent of aerial photography of Abu Dhabi Island, Al Raha Beach, Mussafah and Yas Island. Placing of aerial photography marks has been fully completed in Abu Dhabi Island and Greater Abu Dhabi City, while work is up and running in completing and intensifying both horizontal and vertical networks for survey control points according to the approved project plan. Engineer Yousuf Al Marzouqi, Director of Spatial Data, Town Planning Sector, said the accomplishment was part of Phase I of project implementation which would be followed by collecting data and information from aerial photographs supported by a field survey to ensure data credibility and integration and their incorporation into the municipality’s GIS database after several verifications and revisions to ensure their validity for use by the concerned entities following the best data verification international practices and standards.

He added: “The municipality is in the process of upgrading spatial data software and analytical and modelling spatial data in order to uplift its readiness and enhance the efficiency of services provided to all government and private entities and the public. By the end of the year, aerial photography will be completed for all urban areas within the administrative boundaries of the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City and the Western Region Municipality as part of the Base Map Completion Project.”
