Abu Dhabi: The hourly parking fee at Abu Dhabi airport has been doubled from Dh5 to Dh10, Gulf News has learnt. The 15 minutes of free parking has also been abolished.

"The parking charges per hour have gone up from Dh5 to Dh10 at Terminal 1 car park and Terminal 1 A car park", an Abu Dhabi Airports Company official said.

However the official, who asked not to be named, justified the hike 'in view of increased services offered by the airport and the provision of a cheaper alternative for passengers.'

"We first doubled the parking tariff last year, but a year later we suspended this decision and went back to the old price of Dh5 because there was no cheaper alternative for passengers. A cheaper alternative was necessary especially for those who wished to leave their vehicles for a longer period of time", he said.

The decision was to charge passengers who park their cars at Terminal 2 car park at a rate of Dh5 per hour. By February, the airport obtained approval from the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic Directorate to install parking meters along the public highway for the T2 car park and put the system in place, he said.

"Additionally, we are providing a free shuttle bus service for passengers to park their car at T2 car park and go to T1.

"Although the 15 minute free parking facility has been taken off, we have created new kerb sides near departure areas for those who wish to drop off or pick up passengers. The free time is no longer required", he added.
