RIYADH -- The Directorate General of Passports (Jawazat) will start renewing Saudi passports electronically through the Absher online service in two weeks time, Al-Eqtisadiah daily reported on Thursday quoting a senior Jawazat official. Col. Khaled Al-Saikhan, director of the Jawazat IT department, said the service is currently being trialed and the minister of interior will announce its introduction once the trials are completed. He said all the Jawazat services would be provided electronically.
He said via Absher, the Jawazat on Wednesday alone issued 19,000 exit-re-entry visas and renewed 15,000 residence permits (iqamas). He said since the beginning of the year, more than 3 million iqamas were renewed through Absher. Al-Sakhan said there are about 3 million subscribers to Absher of whom 2.6 million have activated the service.
