Some 9,400 kilometers (km) of highways are under construction across the country, said deputy head of Transportation Infrastructure Construction and Development Company.

Kheirollah Khademi said on Saturday that about 65 trillion rials ($6.5 million) in credit are required to complete the projects, adding that the highways are expected to be constructed within four years, IRNA reported.

Khademi added that construction of new highways in the accident prone and high traffic areas of the country has been prioritized by the company.

"Construction of 1,000 km of highways is presently underway in Khuzestan province, adding 7 trillion rials ($700 million) will be spent on the projects."

The fund required to implement the projects will be procured through national and provincial monetary resources, he said.

In July head of Iran Road Maintenance & Transportation Organization Sharyar Afandizadeh said some 10,000 km of freeways, highways and roads will be built nationwide by the end of the current Iranian year (March, 2013).

He said the country has 2,200 km of freeways and the figure is expected to increase to 3,000 km by the yearend.

According to the official, developing and maintaining freeways, reducing the number of accidents and improving roads' safety are among the most important objectives to be pursued by the organization in the current year.

He also said that some 8 trillion rials ($800 million) in credit were made available to cover and renovate the roads and install smart systems.
