Dubai Over 330 candidates from 27 government agencies are competing for the 15th edition of the Dubai Government Excellence Programme Award, the Dubai Executive Council has announced.

The candidates are hoping to win in one of the 20 categories of the award, nine of which are for government bodies and 11 for employees.

More than 150 candidates have been interviewed for initial assessment, which will be concluded by Sunday, while field inspections to short-listed candidates will be completed by March 1.

The winners of the 2009 Distinguished Team Performance Award, Dubai Civil Defence (DCD), made a bid to win the Distinguished Administrative Initiative this year, with its “Technical Affairs between past and present” initiative, which was first implemented in 2000.

“Developing and manufacturing custom-made civil defence vehicles has been an ongoing process since 2000, but saw a great development since 2007,” Afaf Jasem Ahmad, Director of the Strategy and Performance Development Department at DCD, said.

Rescue vehicles

The department’s most distinguished products include a firefighting vehicle that can enter tunnels and enclosed spaces, a media vehicle which can be used on the site of big accidents or fires to ensure the safety and convenience of media people, firefighting motorcycles, and various types of four-wheel drive cars modified for firefighting and rescue operations in the desert.

Nada Jasem, Manager of Policies and Planning at the Roads and Transport Authority’s Safety, Risk Regulation and Planning Department, has been nominated for the Distinguished Employee in a Specialised Job award.

“As an Emirati engineer specialised in health and safety, I took part in some leading initiatives that resulted in reducing the number of road deaths,” she said.

Nada, who has been working with RTA for three years, believes that completing each task in record time, with the highest quality and the best financial efficiency is what gives her a competitive edge.

Pest control

“It is not just about doing the job, but doing it before it is even asked for, with the lowest cost and highest outcomes,” she said.

Engineer Hisham Abdul Rahman Yahya, Director of Public Health Pest Control Section at Dubai Municipality, agrees.

Nominated for the Distinguished Financial/Administrative Employee, Yahya said the efforts of his department were very clear through the outcomes — which are extremely low numbers of pests affecting public health in the emirate.

One of the most important aspects of his job is combating the malaria carrier mosquito.

“Maintaining the UAE as a malaria-free country takes a lot of hard work because one single new case would mean the withdrawal of the certificate given by the World Health Organisation to the UAE,” he said.

In its efforts to combat pests and rodents, the department very uses chemical pesticides very sparely to help maintain a healthy environment.
