Bahrain - Ways to develop strong and sustainable water management policies will be the focus of the Bahrain International Garden Show (BIGS) 2020.
‘Water: Regenerating Life’ will be the theme of the 16th edition of the annual event hosted by the National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD) under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty King Hamad and Supreme Council for Women president.
The show will be inaugurated by Princess Sabeeka on March 3 at the Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre, Sanabis and will be open to the public from March 4 to 7.
“Water use has been increasing worldwide by about one per cent every year since the 1980s, driven by a combination of population growth, socio-economic development and changing consumption patterns,” said NIAD secretary general Shaikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa.
“Global water demand is expected to continue increasing at a similar rate until 2050, accounting for an increase of 20 per cent to 30pc above the current level of water use, mainly due to rising demand in the industrial and domestic sectors.
“Bahrain ranks in the top 10 countries with the highest population density in the world.
“It is therefore crucial to develop strong water management policies and sustainable management practices.
“Since water is one of the cornerstones of the agricultural process, this year’s show will focus on the theme ‘Water: Regenerating Life’.”
A number of topics will be highlighted including water management, water in relation to the environment, food and energy, water and climate change, water quality and waste water and water sustainability.
“Governments, communities and individuals all play a role in the success of working towards sustainability.
“We need to act now to provide a better future for the generations to come,” added Shaikha Maram in the statement.
The exhibition will also offer a unique platform for agribusinesses through networking and opportunities for partnership with businesses in the region.
“In response to the increasing demand from international gardening and agriculture companies, BIGS will be the perfect opportunity for exporters as well as investors in the gardening, green products, agriculture sectors and related industries, around the world, to introduce them to the Bahrain market.”
The show, which will be attended by VIPS, exporters and importers, architects, consultants, developers and other industry professionals, attracted more than 49,000 visitors this year, increasing every year since its launch in 2004.
Exhibitors will be showcasing garden care, garden design and landscaping, agro products, garden leisure, nurseries and educational organisations.
Visitors can pick from books, magazines and other publications for gardening including electronic media, to organic fertilisers-compost, garden clothing and footwear and machinery for irrigation and drainage systems and maintenance equipment.
Landscaping includes latest techniques of alternative energy solutions, alongside traditional fencing and gates to lighting and ornaments, water fountains and cascades.
Enthusiasts can also get help from gardening training centres, enrol for floral design programmes and become members of trade and industry and agriculture research and development organisations.
Fresh fruits, vegetables, natural and organic cosmetics, dried fruits, coffee, herbs, pulses, nuts, spices, oils, olives, tea and honey will be on sale.
