Sultan opens at AUS, tomorrow MECBME'11

Sharjah, Monday, February 21, 2011--His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qassimi Supreme Council Member, Ruler of Sharjah and President of American University of Sharjah ( AUS ) opens at AUS Main Auditorium on Tuesday the first Middle East Conference on Biomedical Engineering (MECBME'11). The conference will be attended by 300 scholar and scientists from more than 30 different countries, in addition to representatives from industry and government, academics, and students. 113 papers from thirty countries were accepted for publication in the conference proceedings out of 214 papers received. Four distinguished keynote speakers will speak about the latest research and development in the field of biomedical engineering. Tomorrow, Feb. 22, Dr. Nitish V. Thakor from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine will present a keynote entitled "Revolutionizing Prosthesis through Brain Machine Interface" . One Feb. 23, Dr. Rashid Bashir from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign will speak about "BioMEMS and Bionanotechnology. In the afternoon of the same day, Dr. Ulrich Steinseifer from the Dept. of Cardiovascular Engineering, Helmholtz Institute, RWTH Aachen University, Germany will present his keynote "From Heart Valve Replacement to Total Artificial Hearts: Technologies and Trends in Cardiovascular Engineering".

The technical program will include twenty one sessions. The themes of the technical sessions cover a wide range of biomedical engineering subjects including Biomedical Signal and Image Processing, Bioinstrumentation, Nanomedicine, Biosensors, Circuits and Systems, Neuroengineering, Rehabilitation and Therapeutic Systems, Imaging, Biophotonics, System Modeling, Bioinformatics, Biomechanics, Artificial Organs and Prosthesis, Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, Healthcare Information Systems, e-Health, Clinical Engineering, , Biomedical Education and Medical Physics. With the slogan "Connecting Professionals in Biomedical Sciences and Technology" MECBME'11 will provide a forum for professional engineers, scientists and academics engaged in research and development to convene and present their latest scholarly work and applications in biomedical engineering. The first Middle East Conference on Biomedical Engineering will also attract top managers and decision makers of international and regional healthcare organizations, entrepreneurs from healthcare industries, government representatives, business consultants and media representatives. The conference should therefore, provide an excellent context for networking and discussions.

This conference with its slogan "Connecting Professionals in Biomedical Sciences and Technology" was initiated 18 months ago by a team of biomedical engineering specialists from academia and industry representing many countries including UAE, Egypt, KSA, Jordan, Kuwait, Turkey, Palestine, Australia, Lebanon, China and USA. The conference is chaired by Dr. Hasan Al-Nashash while the technical committee was co-chaired by Dr. Khaled Assaleh and Dr. Yasser Kaddah. The other key members of the organizing committee are Dr. Nasser Qaddoumi and Ms. Salwa Mohammad for local arrangements, Dr. Bahattin Karagozoglu and Dr. Aydin Yesildirek for tutorials, Dr. Hasan Mir for Special Sessions, Mr. Malik Husseinee and Mohammad Mishmish for Industrial Liaisons, Dr. Lutfi Albasha for Publications and Dr. Kinda Khalaf for publicity. To enhance collaboration between academia and industry, there will be an industrial panel composed of leaders and speakers from industry who will be speaking on Feb. 22. Mr. Maurice Faber, Vice president, Siemens Healthcare, Middle East will open the panel discussion with his speech on "Minimum dose. Maximum Speed. The Technology behind". Mr. Malek El Husseini, GE Healthcare, Business Development Director Middle East with his presentation entitled "Hospital of the Future", Dr. Mamdouh Ayad, Market Access Director in Johnson & Johnson, MEEP (Medical Middle East, Egypt & Pakistan) with his presentation entitled "Growing Demand for Value Solutions in Healthcare", Mr. Andrew Larkins, Operations Director of Triteq Ltd, UK, with his presentation entitled "Developing Medical Devices from University Research".

On the first day of the conference, three tutorials will run for the whole day. These tutorials target engineers from industry, researchers and students. The morning tutorials will cover Modeling Micro/Nano system for Biomedical Instrumentation presented by Dr. John Collins, Director of Nanotechnology at Maxwell Sensors, Santa Fe Springs, CA in parallel with Digital Ultrasound Imaging presented by Dr. Yasser M. Kadah, Biomedical Engineering Department, Cairo University. The afternoon tutorial on Bioengineering human senses will be presented by Dr. Christopher Druzgalski, President of the Association of California State University Professors will be presented. Several national and international organizations and companies have sponsored this conference.
