The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Education has recognised Tetra Pak Arabiafor its efforts in "FeenaKhair,"a nation-wide school Hygiene and Cleanliness Project. Tetra Pak is the world's leading food processing and packaging solutions company, with a major production facility in Jeddah (KSA) and offices across the GCC and in Yemen.
"FeenaKhair" in Arabic or "Good in us" is an on-going government programme designed to educate children about the importance of public cleanliness and the application of this concept in schools.
Tetra Pak Arabia supported the recycling component of the project along with its recycling partner, Trewind Recycling.The project consisted of placing bins made of recycled beverage cartons for segregation of waste inside 52 schools in the Jeddah city area. Children were also given activity booklets explaining how beverage cartons are recycled.
Mohammed Angawi, Environment Manager at Tetra Pak Arabia, said: "Recycling forms an important pillar of our commitment to the environment and society at large and we are honoured to receive this award from Saudi Arabian Ministry of Education. Through our participation in 'FeenaKhair,' we aim to educate the young Saudi population about the benefits of recycling as well as encouragerecycling habits amongst our future generation."
"The success of the 'FeenaKhair' project is demonstrated through the steady increase in the volume of recyclables collected throughout the programme, showing a positive response from students and teachers."
The FeenaKhair programme was officially launched by HRH Prince Faisal bin Abdullah Al Saud, the Saudi Minister of Education, in 2010. The programme aims to provide a healthier school environment by bringing together teachers, students and parents, instilling teamwork, responsibility, cleanliness and environmental care.
In 2010 over 30 billion of Tetra Pak's cartons were recycled worldwide. The increase in the amount of cartons being recycled has been over a billion cartons a year.
