Samsung Appoints Hyder to Provide Detailed Design of Muharraq STP in Bahrain
The project is located in the Muharraq area of the Kingdom of Bahrain and the ultimate client is the Ministry of Works . The project is a 27 year build own operate and transfer (BOOT) scheme and will be delivered by Muharraq STP Co. BSC, a special purpose company made up of the EPC Contractor Samsung Engineering; the operator United Utilities; and Invest AD.
The objective of the scheme is to collect and treat waste water to a high standard suitable for the treated effluent (TSE) to be reused. The project includes intercepting 24 existing pumping stations and diverting the flows through new waste water connection networks to a 16 kilometre long, 1.8 metre diameter micro-tunnelled deep gravity sewer which discharges to a terminal lifting station located at the head of the new sewage treatment plant.
The new deep gravity sewer has an intermediate lift station about half way along the route that lifts the flow so that its depth does not exceed 15 metres below ground level. A new sewage treatment plant (STP) with a capacity of 100,000 cubic metres per day will be constructed on a reclaimed Greenfield site. The STP has a long sea outfall that will be used to discharge any unused TSE and any bypass flows to the sea. The site also includes a new sludge incinerator plant to treat the sludge from the sewage treatment plant.
This waste water infrastructure project encompasses all elements of wastewater engineering. The project will provide much needed infrastructure to the people in the Kingdom of Bahrain and will result in significant environmental benefits. The project also represents a significant inward investment to Bahrain and will help facilitate Bahrain's development and growth.
Construction of the plant is expected to be complete by August 2013, and it will be operational for 25 years. In line with a social partnership approach, and in collaboration with Muharraq Municipal Council, the Ministry of Works will hold an exhibition in Busaiteen to provide the public with an opportunity to understand the environmental and health aspects of the Muharraq project.
'Samsung Engineering Co., Ltd has recently signed the agreement for consultation works related to the project with Hyder Consulting Middle East Ltd ,' said Al Mansoor.
"This award is a vote of confidence in Hyder 's capability. Our integrated approach with Samsung and the Ministry of Works in Bahrain will ensure successful project delivery," said Wael Allan, Regional Managing Director of Hyder consulting Middle East Limited. "This is a very important social infrastructure project which will contribute to the welfare of the Bahraini people.
