MUSCAT: Over 100 Omani employees of the Port Sultan Qaboos went on strike yesterday morning demanding better benefits.
Sources said that port services were completely affected as entry to the port was blocked and the facilities could not be utilised.
A employee who has been working for the port for the last 28 years was among the leading protestors. His grouse was that "despite so many years of dedicated service he had not received recognition in the form of promotions."
"This is gross injustice, I want the authorities to open their eyes. Atleast now we have a platform to raise these issues," he said.
Other protestors too wanted promotions, better facilities, improved HR policy and complete Omanisation.
"We don't want promises. We want immediate solutions to our problems," one of them insisted.
Some of them also wanted to be given "sea duty allowances".
Along with the hike they also wanted salaries to be fixed.
"Like the expatriates who get health insurance we also want to get the facility," an employee said.
Protestors also carried posters of 'No To Corruption'.
Port Sultan Qaboos is operated and managed by Port Services Corporation SAOG since November 1976.
Port Services Corporation (PSC) had yesterday announced 7.5 per cent to 20 per cent increase of its employees' basic salaries and a raise in the annual allowance.
The management also approved a 'port allowance' to be granted to all the corporation employees with effect from November 2010. The annual allowance will be calculated in accordance with the new value allocations which took effect from January 2011.
