Muscat: Nova Medical Centre (NOVA), a company focused on surgical care and fertility clinics, will open Oman's first-of-its-kind short-stay surgical centre at Al Ghubra.

Making the announcement at a media round-table discussion to mark the first anniversary of the company's existence in Oman, Suresh Soni, chairman and CEO of NOVA Speciality Surgery, said, "Construction for this state-of-the-art 30-bed surgical centre costing $10 million will start in the next few weeks and will likely open within the next 15 months. It will house five operation theatres, a cath lab, a rehab centre, and one dedicated IVI Fertility centre to help childless couples conceive through the process of assisted reproduction, as well as other facilities.

"Currently, we have about 700 surgeons across India and the Middle East, and by the time the surgical centre in Al Ghubra is operational, the number of surgeons working with NOVA will go up to 1,000. The existing clinic in Muscat sees 3,000 patients every month, and it is a good number considering that we have only just completed a year in operation," he added.

"Nova Medical Centre is a joint venture between the Omzest Group and Nova Specialty Surgery India, where Omzest has a 49 per cent stake in the Middle East region, and in India, Omzest has a stake of 10 per cent. In total, we have raised equity of $90 million."
Dr K.M. Harikrishnan, general manager of operations and senior consultant, as well as a general and laparoscopic surgeon, remarked, "NOVA is a name to reckon with in short-stay surgeries, which take anywhere between 24 and 72 hours from admission to patient discharge and may include day-care surgeries, wherein the patient is discharged within a day.

"Using minimally invasive techniques to reduce hospitalization and improve recovery time, we have pioneered this unique cost-effective healthcare delivery model in India, and we wish to replicate it in this country. Also, orthopaedics and other allied medical services are very high on our agenda."
