MALDIVES, Male -- Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) inaugurated its Hithadhoo branch, Addu City, on Saturday.
The inauguration ceremony, attended by some 150 guests including leading businessmen from Addu City and Male, was officiated by Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, Minister of Islamic Affairs.
Also present to grace on the occasion were Aishath Zahira, Deputy Governor of the Maldives Monetary Authority; Abdulla Soddiq, Mayor of Addu City; Khaled Al-Aboodi, CEO and General Manager of I by the Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector, the private sector arm of the Islamic Development Bank Group; Najmul Hasan, Chairman, as well other members of the Board of Directors of MIB.
MIB Hithadoo branch is located at Thuhbeege Building, Elhadheedhee Magu, Hithadoo. It offers a complete range of banking products and services that are compliant with Shariah, including deposit and investment accounts, business financing facilities, consumer financing facilities, trade finance and other ancillary services. The branch is headed by Aishath Shama. She is supported by five staff.
The opening of MIB Hthadoo branch is an important milestone for MIB as it marks the start of the implementation of the bank's strategic plan to expand its branch network to islands outside Male to meet the rising demand for Islamic services by the public throughout the country.
Towards this end, the bank has to set up four branches in the key geographical markets over the next 2-3 years. Addu, the second biggest island in the Maldives in terms of population, was chosen as the location of the first branch outside Male considering its market size and high economic potential.
The opening of MIB branch in the city will enable the bank to tap the growing business opportunities in the second biggest market in the country, and at the same time contribute to the socio-economic development of the local community, it said.
Maldives Islamic Bank Pvt Ltd is the first and only full-fledged Islamic bank in the Republic of Maldives. The bank started its operations on March 7, 2011.
