Doha: Georgetown University yesterday signed an agreement as the academic partner of Josoor Institute, a centre of excellence for the sports and events industries, inspired and developed by the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC).

The agreement extends cooperation between SC and the university as the main academic partner of Josoor.

It was signed by Dr. Robert M Groves, Provost and Executive Vice-President of Georgetown University's Main Campus in Washington, DC, and Hassan Al Thawadi, Secretary-General of SC, on behalf of Josoor.

Present were Mushtaq Al Waeli, Acting Executive Director, Josoor; and Paul Tagliabue, former commissioner of National Football League and Vice-Chair, Board of Directors of the university.

The university will work with Josoor to continue implementing a variety of programmes and workshops developed by Georgetown's industry-leading faculty on a wide spectrum of topics associated with the sports and events industries.

The university, through its School of Continuing Studies and McDonough School of Business on the main campus, will lead the development, delivery, assessment and review of the diploma and certificate programmes in Football and Sports Management.

Georgetown will lead the development of Professional Diploma and Certificate modules for Managerial and Leadership Core Competencies on Football and Sports Management and Events Management Programmes.

The programmes will address the need to develop technical knowledge and skills in the field and overall management and leadership capabilities of delegates.

The modules will cover topics, including business acumen, strategy, people and leadership, management communication and financial management, among others.

Dr Groves said, "We are pleased that we are able to build on the strength and success of our initial agreement to design the academic framework for Josoor.

"By developing the human capital needed for the growth of the sports and events industries, Georgetown can play a vital role in Qatar and the region's efforts in moving towards a sustainable knowledge-based economy."

Al Thawadi said: "The investments the SC is making in providing unique skills training to thousands of people through Josoor will create positive opportunities for generations to come.

"Georgetown University has been an integral partner in our drive to nurture the best local and international talent, and to build a thriving and sustainable future, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030. We are pleased to have reiterated our commitment towards capacity building by strengthening our ties with Georgetown."

Josoor was developed by the SC in December 2013. Since its inception, over 1,800 delegates from across the region have attended its workshops and programmes.

World-class speakers have been involved in the delivery of 28 workshops and programmes. Over the next few months Josoor will launch its research division to help address the research gaps in the region.
