Representative of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) said Iran is the third largest IDB shareholder and one of the bank's five main decision-makers.

"Iran holds a 28-percent share and is one of the largest capital holders in Islamic Development Bank," IDB representative Ali Fallahi told Fars News Agency on Tuesday.

"Iran joined the IDB on March 12, 1989 and is currently one of the eight members with assets of $1.5billion," he added.

He mentioned that Iran is receiving 11.6 percent of the bank's assistance and loans for 10 agricultural and irrigation projects in 2011, adding that the two sides are also cooperating in silo construction.

Earlier in 2011, the IDB provided $123 million for water projects in Iran, Senegal and Yemen. This included $84.3 million for the rural areas wastewater project in the northwest and southeast regions of Iran.

In 2010, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad commended the Islamic Development Bank for supporting the construction of Iran-Turkmenistan-Kazakhstan railroad, and called on the bank to extend more financial backing for joint projects in Islamic states.
