Accredited Diabetes Educator certification programme run by Qatar Diabetes Association and Action on Diabetes

A group of healthcare professionals in Doha celebrated success this month as they graduated from an intensive Accredited Diabetes Educator Certification Program, a nine month learning course designed to equip professionals with vital insight into the latest developments in diabetes care and diabetes education and ultimately improve the quality of life for those with the condition.

The Accredited Diabetes Educator Graduate Certificate programme was delivered by the Canadian Michener Institute for Applied Health Science, in conjunction with Calgary University- Qatar, and supported by Action on Diabetes and the Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA) - Qatar Foundation.

The graduation ceremony and awards dinner was held at the Al-Mirqab Boutique Hotel, Souq Waqif, with 25 healthcare professionals from Qatar and the region in attendance to receive the prestigious award.

Dr. Abdulla Al Hamaq, Executive Director of Qatar Diabetes Association- member of Qatar Foundation, said:

I am delighted to see such a talented group of healthcare professionals complete this world class Diabetes Educator Graduate Certification Programme. At QDA it is our goal to deliver programmes that are designed to help people affected by diabetes. Given that diabetes is one of Qatars biggest health challenges with 16.7% of Qataris living with the condition, having 25 health professionals graduate this year puts us one step forward in increasing awareness among the community and enabling us to better support patients living with the condition.

Herluf Nis Thomsen, Novo Nordisk, Senior Project Manager at Action on Diabetes, said

It has been a pleasure to work with the Qatar Diabetes Association and the Canadian Michener Institute for the second year running to support this valuable project. At Action on Diabetes, we continue to work to support those working in diabetes care by hosting workshops and facilitating courses that offer diabetes education and training, and are committed to helping prevent diabetes from increasing further in Qatar. I would like to congratulate every healthcare professional that has completed this course and thank them for their important contribution in helping to maintain the highest standards of care in Qatar.

The Diabetes Educator Graduate Certificate programme is the first distance learning programme of its kind to be run in Qatar. The programme included six online modules and evaluation through written assignments, presentations and web-based examinations.

Action on Diabetes was launched in November 2011 and aims to help deliver HH The Emir's vision of a healthy and prosperous Qatar, and support the Qatari authorities to reduce the incidence of diabetes.
