Dubai, 19 September 2014: The GCC Pharmaceutical Congress concludes in Dubai, at the last day of the leading congress, Dr. Zakaria Al Attal, PhD, CPHQ, Senior Consultant for Organisational Development and International Accreditation, Ministry of Health, UAE, focused on the importance of promoting the culture of patient safety among doctors, pharmacists nurses, and technicians working in the health institutions in UAE, the culture aims to encourage health care providers to monitor medical errors and submit to senior management in health institutions using the available monitoring tools, which helps to improve the performance and makes the experience of patients in hospitals and health institutions safer.
"The culture of patient safety should exclude blame and punishment and focus on identifying the causes of medication errors and ensuring the prevention of the error, recent international studies indicated that most of medication errors are bit related to skills of the medical team but related to the rules and regulations inside healthcare institutions". Said Dr. Al Attal
Dr. Attal also highlighted the importance of the initiatives of Ministry of Health to promote patient safety. "Implementing the international standards in hospitals supports the healthcare sector to become one of the best 10 systems worldwide by 2020, which would have good effect in improving the level of patient safety in health institutions, and make the healthcare services in UAE much safer and more attractive for medical tourism".
The local and regional experts participated in the congress discussed a number of recommendations includes: implementing E-Claim clinical care system for the information systems designed to improve patient safety, establishing custom design drug database for licensed drug in each of the GCC states, designing a Medication error reporting system with continuous updates, a risk management committee in every hospital to ensure patient safety culture, conducting cost effective analysis of implementing the fault proof Healthcare system vs. Cost of loss due to prescription errors for both UAE & KSA based on MOH Statistics.
