Dubai – United Arab Emirates - The 1st edition of Emirates International Forensic Science Conference and Exhibition continued its second day with the presence of Major General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police for Criminal Investigation, and the participation of a number of local and international experts who had come to share their experiences and enrich their knowledge in the field of forensic science and criminology.
Emirates Forensic presents a rich scientific program with a wide range of topics of current interest, presented by prominent speakers. The conference agenda on its 2nd day covered various topics that included: Crime Scene Investigation, a Matter of Questions , Detection of GHB and analogues in forensic cases by enzymatic assay followed by UPLC-MS/MS confirmation, Hair Analysis Evolution, Reliance on Forensic DNA Validation Studies to Establish Sound Guidelines for DNA Mixture Interpretation , An Improved Capillary Electrophoresis System for Human Identification , The Application of Police Dogs in Civil Crises and Catastrophes Nuclear Forensics: an emerging forensic science discipline, Incident Response Process Forensics, and many more.
Dr. Fuad Ali Tarbah, Director Training Research & Development Dept. at Dubai Police, and Head of Scientific Council, said: "Solving crimes rely on three things: a qualified forensic expert, advanced and accurate forensic devices, and finally operating forensic materials. In this event, we have many exhibitors putting on display the latest equipment and techniques to help fight crime. Those exhibiting companies will take the suggestions and ideas of Dubai Police officers and other colleagues from crime labs participating in the conference, to develop and apply them, and next year they will come back to present their findings and results.”
The conference has featured the topic of Crime Scene Investigation, a Matter of Questions that was presented by Prof. Dr. Fahad Aldosari, General Director of Investigation Department, Kuwait Police Force and it discussed the vast research done by scene of crime officers (SOCOs) and forensic scientists on the procedures of crime scene investigation, as little is known about the perspectives of studying the distribution of physical evidence at the crime scene. This study is carried out through applying science in systematic methods on physical evidence in order to find out the link between such evidence, the suspect, victim, crime scene and usual tools in committing crimes [SSLL].
The conference has also touched upon Cannabis and driving - What are the risks?, that was presented by Prof. Thomas Daldrup Professor, Department of Forensic Toxicology, Institute of Legal Medicine Heinrich-Heine-University in Germany, and it discussed the effect of Cannabis on drivers. It was found that THC was the most prevalent illicit drug in the general driving population and in injured or killed drivers. The epidemiological, experimental and meta-analytical approaches resulted in rather low risk estimations. Epidemiological case-control studies assess at maximum a 2.4-fold risk for injury; experimental studies and meta-analysis rank this risk between 0.5 and 2 times higher than that of sober driving.
On the other hand, Mr. Barry Fisher, M.S. MBA Retired Crime Laboratory Director Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, has discussed the Challenges facing Forensic Science in the United States – Admissibility of Pattern Evidence.
Emirates Forensic 2017 has also featured 4 workshops on its 2nd day. The 1st workshop was about Peroxides Explosives that was presented by Ms. Hamda Ali Sultan, Head of the Forensic Explosives Section at Dubai Police and Ms. Lisa Dunn, Consultant of General Department of Forensic Science and Criminology at Dubai Police, where the workshop focused on the manufacture of explosives based on household and other materials available for individuals, and the issue of the internet being a source of information about ways of creating explosives.
The 2nd workshop has featured the topic of Novel Psychoactive Substances In The U.S. Forensic Drug Laboratory: One State Laboratory’s Experience With Synthetic Cathinones, Cannabinoids And Opioids, and it was presented by Dr. Jeremy S. Triplett, Laboratory Supervisor, Kentucky State Police Central Forensic Laboratory.
The 3rd workshop was an introduction on Blood Pattern Analysis presented by Dr. Sara Al Mughawi, Medico Legal Expert, Lt. Eng. Mohammad Abdulla Al Shamsi, Firearms & Tool Marks Assistant Expert, and Fatma Jamal ALtamimi, Assistant Expert ( Biology & DNA).
The last workshop was a Practical Workshop on Disaster Victim Identification presented by Dr. Suhail Al Amad, Assistant Professor of Oral Medicine/ Forensic dontologist, University of Sharjah and it discussed methods and ways to identify the victims of disasters and crises.
