Dubai signed a construction contract on Wednesday to expand the passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport by 120 percent by the middle of next year, according to Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP).

DAEP, a subsidiary of Dubai Aviation City Corporation, appointed UAE-based Al Jaber LEGT Engineering and Contracting (ALEC) to carry out the expansion of the passenger terminal area at Dubai's second airport to 145,926 square metres (sqm) from the current 66,107 sqm under the first phase of development.

The expansion, which will include 12 new boarding lounges, is scheduled for completion by June 2017, DAEP said in a statement. It did not mention the value of the deal.

"It is expected that following additional planned extensions, the airport will handle up to 26.5 million passengers per year by 2025," said the firm which is responsible for the planning, construction, renovation and infrastructure works of airports and airport facilities.

It said that in the long-term, Al Maktoum International Airport would be able to manage up to 220 million passengers a year.

"Today's announcement marks a historic milestone in the journey of Al Maktoum International which is set to become the world's largest airport," the statement quoted Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, president of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, as saying.

"We are poised to significantly boost Dubai's economy by creating a world-class facility capable of handling the growing number of passengers visiting and transiting our city," added Sheikh Ahmed, who is also chairman of Dubai Aviation City Corporation and the chairman and CEO of Emirates Airline.

The proposed expansion will also see the addition of 55 control counters in the arrival building while the departure hall will get 64 new check-in desks, the statement said.
