Academic research collaboration between a staff member and a student of the British University in Dubai guides strategic human resource management.

HH Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum is a Senior Strategic Planning and Business Support Officer in DP World and is also a recent graduate of the Human Resource Management Masters Program at the British University in Dubai.  Dr Tamer Elewa was once HR Director for a leading pharmaceutical company, heading teams in 74 countries. They joined together in research to understand better how to work with employees so that they develop shared vision and invest greater intellect, emotion, and energy in their work. Published internationally by German academic publishing house Scholar's Press, "The Engagement Code" sets out the '4H model' and explains how the Head, the Heart, the Hand and Hope should be key focus points for effective human resource management. It offers tools and techniques to measure engagement that have now been validated scientifically.

Dr Elewa joined BUiD as an Assistant Professor for the MBA programme and MSc HRM in 2013 with a mission to support the creation of an excellent education in the Arab World. Dr Elewa believes in working with his students to develop local research capacity and foster a 'can do' attitude in the UAE. He said, "As both HR Director and academic researcher I noticed a lack of knowledge of employee engagement in the UAE. If the UAE wants to rank as a top-performing economy it will need to understand what works and what doesn't". Shaikh Saeed's experience in business scenario planning and strategy led him to identify employee engagement as critical to organizational performance. He said, "to now, organisations in the UAE rely heavily on measurement tools and expertise imported from UK and USA that are not applicable to the Gulf region. It has been a great learning experience for me working with Dr Tamer Elewa, and in this book we have managed to put together the right "Engagement Code".

Prof Abdullah Alshamsi, Vice-Chancellor of The British University in Dubai congratulated both Dr Tamer and HH Shaikh Saeed Al Maktoum on the success of their joint project adding, "I am very happy to see such great collaboration between academics and students resulting in international publications that assist knowledge workers in supporting the UAE Vision 2021. This is what we encourage at BUiD.
