Dubai: Public transport rides in Dubai will be sweeter this Ramadan as the riders travelling around Iftar time will get free meals, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Monday.

RTA in partnership with Beit Al Khair Society and the UAE Food Bank will be giving away up to 4,000 Iftar meals daily through the month of Ramadan at different bus and metro stations.

The RTA has launched a series of initiatives to mark the advent of the holy month of Ramadan.

According to Moaza Al Merri, Director of Marketing and Corporate Communication at RTA, the initiatives stem from RTA’s social responsibility and keenness to forge a compassionate links between its employees and the community.

“The RTA is holding an array of events during the current month of Ramadan in line with its efforts to keep up with The Year of Giving initiative. For the seventh year in a row, the RTA will launch the ‘Meals on Wheels’ initiative, this year in coordination with the UAE Food Bank,” said Al Merri.

As part of the plan, the RTA will deploy two buses to distribute 4,000 Iftar meals, in collaboration with Beit Al Khair Society, to public transport riders at five bus stations and four metro stations.

In addition to Meals on Wheels, the authority will also distribute essential food packages to 400 disadvantaged families in Hatta and other areas of Dubai while celebrating the Zayed Humanitarian Day which falls on 19th of Ramadan

Other than bus and metro stations, RTA will also distribute Iftar meals at several traffic junctions in partnership with Al Ihsan Charity Association

“The move is aimed at encouraging motorists to slowdown and stop them from speeding to reach their homes in time for Iftar,” said Al Merri.

RTA’s Women Committee is also playing an active role in supporting Ramadan events this year.

The committee is holding a mass Iftar for RTA employees and female drivers of the Dubai Taxi Corporation, besides offering them coupons for Ramadan rations.

The committee is preparing for the distribution of Ramadan supplies to underprivileged families and is set to offer children of these families entry coupons for Kidzania.

The committee will also support Eid Joy initiative by serving the Eid needs of 100 needy children and help them enjoy the festival like others.
