Abu Dhabi: Nearly 70 per cent of heavy vehicles that are transporting goods on the emirate of Abu Dhabi’s roads have major safety defects and are not fit to be on the road, the Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport (DMAT) announced in a statement on Sunday.

The results were derived from fields inspections carried out by the DMAT, which regulates the transportation sector in the emirate of Abu Dhabi.

“We aim to raise the level of heavy vehicle safety, and our field work has allowed us to identify the main challenges facing the sector. Consequently, we can prevent accidents and enhance the quality of services to create an effective, safe and sustainable freight system,” said Ahmad Al Hammadi, director of the freights division at the DMAT.

At a recent workshop attended by 100 specialists, the DMAT stressed that it will fine motorists and companies that do not ensure that vehicles comply with the relevant safety standards.

Most importantly, operators were asked to check trucks three times a month, and allow for an annual technical check. In addition, drivers who are exhausted should not be allowed to drive till they are rested.
