The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) on Sunday presented the investment opportunities for the redesign and development of Port Sultan Qaboos in Muscat as a tourism and waterfront destination.

Making a presentation on the opportunities in the transport and logistics sector, Hanan al Rabbi, general manager, planning and studies, MoTC, said, "The work on the first phase of the project will be carried out during the period 2016-2019."

The plans for first phase will include a five star hotel in marina (180 rooms), retail shops (boutiques) on the main parks (7500 m2), shopping centre area of 39,000 m2, Offices' area of 4,600 m2, high quality housing for rent (200 units), apartment for first time buyers (56 units), branded homes for sale (219 units) and entertainment/ leisure centres.

Hanan said the second phase of the project will be carried out from 2018-2022 and includes a five star resort hotel (160 rooms), four-star resort hotel (280 rooms), luxury homes of popular brands (83 units), housing from regular brands (338 units), sophisticated resort for recreation (4,100 m2), club for children (2,000 m2), beach club 1,000 m2, sports complex (2,000 m2), conferences and concerts (2,000 m2).

According to details provided by Atkins, engineering and project management consultancy firm, on its, website, "The redevelopment of the port will transform the PSQ into Oman's premier waterfront destination ensuring integration with and enhancement of adjacent historically sensitive areas including Muttrah and Harat al Shamal.

"The new port will support the government's drive towards a diversified economy by creating up to 5,000 direct jobs and accommodating up to 10,000 visitors per day. The redevelopment will enable increased international cruise liner arrivals and has the potential to operate as a dedicated home port."

Dr Ali al Sunaidy, Minister of Commerce and Industry, on Sunday said several projects have been identified to be developed under the Public Private Partnerships (PPPs), which include the PSQ and Khasab Port among others.

He had said instead of the government investing billions of rials in a tourism project like the PSQ, it should be left open for the private investment.

Hanan said for the Khasab port, the development plans in the tourism sector includes, berths for tourist boats and yacht, hotels and sailing and marinas club.

For the Shinas port, plans include conversion of the lake to the freely or protected natural park, berth for cruise ships and yachts, facilities for the maintenance of ships and tourist boats, hotels and commercial centres and marine club for diving and fishing.
