Muscat: The Oman Project Management & Development Company (OPMDC), one of three subsidiaries set up by Omran -- the government's tourism investment and development arm -- is currently executing a portfolio of projects that will make a significant contribution to the Sultanate's increasingly pivotal tourism industry when completed over the course of the next three years. Most notable is the five-star W-Hotel currently under development just behind the Omran-owned InterContinental Muscat in Shatti Al Qurum, said a key official of OPMDC, better known by its brand 'Bunyan'.

Salim al Thuhli, Director - Leisure Development, said construction work on the 290-key W-Hotel began in February this year and is due for completion by 2017.  Speaking at the Dossier Construction Awards Summit that was held at the InterContinental Muscat last week, Al Thuhli said Bunyan's mandate as a construction and project management company gives it responsibility for the execution of new hotel and tourism projects developed under Omran's umbrella.

"Bunyan was established last year as a subsidiary of Omran with responsibility to develop and implement tourism projects across the country.  The company has responsibility for developing Omran's assets in terms of hotels and other tourism projects. Bunyan is a project management, as well as a development company," he stated.

Yet another project currently in the final stages of implementation is the Quriyat-Sur Rest Area, a pilot initiative launched by Omran to develop a nationwide network of rest areas along Oman's main roads and highways.

Rounding off the trio of projects that form Bunyan's current construction portfolio is the upscale Al Baleed Seafood Restaurant, which is under implementation at the Al Baleed World Heritage Site in Salalah, said Al Thuhli.

The uniquely designed eatery, set beside a lagoon, will feature a 60-seat indoor restaurant along with 50-seat patio dining and 30-seat rooftop dining areas.

Commenting on Bunyan's support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), the official said the subsidiary was guided by Omran's overall philosophy and vision for nurturing Omani businesses and startups. Citing the example of the multibillion-dollar Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre (OCEC), the flagship of Omran's tourism schemes, he said the project currently supports as many as 134 Omani SMEs.
