• Bus is a recycled ex-commercial vehicle that has been given a new lease of life to support Expo 2020 Dubai’s recycling education and awareness efforts

Dubai, UAE: Emirati integrated solutions provider Dulsco, the Official Waste Management Partner of Expo 2020 Dubai, aims to create a recycling buzz with the big reveal of its recycling bus to audiences at the World Future Energy Summit (WFES), which is being hosted at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week from January 13 – 16, 2020.

A first-of-its-kind initiative in the region, Dulsco’s bus will be on display at WFES, with the branded colourful vehicle featuring a variety of bins as receptacles for different recyclable waste products. The installation encourages community members to discard their recyclables into designated waste streams. Following WFES, the bus will stop at the Expo 2020 Dubai site during its own Sustainability Week, which will take place between January 19 – 23, 2020, to remind all Expo 2020 Dubai staff about the importance of waste segregation and recycling.

The launch of Dulsco’s recycling bus at WFES forms part of a programme that will shortly see it setting off on a journey around the United Arab Emirates to raise awareness in communities on the importance of disposing of waste correctly so that it can be reused with a new life-cycle. The initiative also supports Expo 2020 Dubai’s objectives to engage with the community and expand the impact of sustainability beyond the boundaries of the physical site and beyond the duration of the six-month event. The vehicle’s planned itinerary includes stops at schools and other institutions to highlight waste recycling, with its journey also tied into environmental awareness days.

Along with educating people and raising awareness, Dulsco’s recycling bus will be travelling around communities to physically collect recyclable waste and transport it to its various waste recycling facilities, including the new state-of-the-art Materials Recovery Facility in Ras Al Khor, Dubai. Along its journey, it will also be the focus of specially organised community events that form part of Dulsco’s CSR programme, which revolves around its commitment to “powering better communities” through the ‘4R’s:’ reducing, reusing, repurposing and recycling.

In addition to demonstrating how Dulsco aims to meet Expo 2020 Dubai and federal waste diversion targets, Dulsco’s recycling bus will show how the company is contributing to the creation of a circular economy – an economic model that brings resources back into use and feeds back to the economy. Among the processes they will be demonstrating is how attractive items of apparel, such as T-shirts and caps, can be fashioned from plastic bottles; how discarded glass can enter a new life-cycle as candle holders, serving trays and coasters; and how paper and cardboard can be transformed into egg trays, cup-holders and seed pots.

“The future of energy is one that is going to be defined by a commitment towards renewables and sustainability, with the effective reuse of waste a vital aspect of this commitment. The World Future Energy Summit is the ideal platform for us to show how – as the Official Waste Management Partner of Expo 2020 Dubai – we will be supporting Expo 2020 Dubai to achieve a rate of 85 per cent waste diversion away from landfill. This will further contribute towards the achievement of the diversion goals stated in the UAE’s Vision 2021. A major part of this diversion will be achieved with our innovative waste repurposing processes which view waste as a resource,” said David Stockton, CEO and Managing Director, Dulsco.

“Our partnership with Dulsco is indicative of our steadfast commitment to one of Expo 2020 Dubai’s core subthemes, sustainability, which permeates everything we do at Expo 2020. Segregating, treating and diverting 85 per cent of onsite waste away from landfill is a key target within our wider sustainability programme, reflecting a commitment to reduce our environmental footprint and set an example for future mega-events,” said Sanjive Khosla, Chief Commercial Officer, Expo 2020 Dubai.

“We are excited to work with a partner whose innovative solutions, including the Dulsco recycling bus, are helping to ensure a strong and impactful Expo 2020 legacy by engaging schools and communities to educate and inspire communities to take their own actions to positively impact the environment.”

Dulsco’s recycling bus will be stationed at stand number 3400 at WFES EcoWASTE Exhibition & Forum from January 13 – 16, 2020. In partnership with Expo 2020 Dubai, Dulsco will also be showcasing the recycling journey that waste goes through, displaying actual recycled products that can be used on a daily basis.
