Covid-19 pandemic accelerates transition to e-platforms for the business in the UAE

In a technologically-advanced world as ours, digital modes of working has always existed to help people in remote parts of the world connect and share information. However, the onslaught of Covid-19 has propelled the platform, making it a highly sought after solution to continue business operations as usual.

The UAE government, at a recent Digital Government Meeting, asserted that several factors - ranging from the UAE's wise leadership future vision and state-of-the-art technological infrastructure, to flexibility in developing proactive solutions and keeping pace with changes and emergencies - had contributed towards the country's move towards digital options.
The adoption of new and existing technologies has given rise to an interconnected environment, giving organisations an opportunity to evaluate their operations and implement risk management solutions.

"Government entities in Dubai are ready for a post-Covid-19 world, especially in regard to human resources, future jobs and remote working. What the world has witnessed over the past few months has made the issue of remote working in the government sector an important matter that will have priority over the coming period," said Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al Falasi, Director General of Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR) and Chairman of the Dubai Future Council on Talents, addressing the public sector in a report by the Dubai Future Foundation.

Several private organisations have successfully overcome challenges posed by Covid-19 and shifted operations to digital platforms, with a limited number of employees in the physical workplace; that too, if their presence is essential. In a bid to enable connectivity during work hours, organisations implemented the extensive use of communication tools, such as Microsoft Teams and other facilities for data sharing and other resources. The new norm of working from home has also stimulated the drive for better telecommunication channels in order to support the transition and strengthen long-term goals of health and safety during the pandemic.

Those involved in commerce and finance have set focus on digital outlets, providing online services as well as staff to address concerns at any time of the day. Retail, including fast-moving consumer goods, have enhanced their virtual shopping experience, complemented by contactless delivery and strict hygiene practices aligned with the UAE regulations. Healthcare too has made progressive strides with telemedicine and professional consultations.

The UAE continues to empower businesses with ease in regulations, accessible financing options and waivered fees. This is expected to engage and support remote working activities in the coming months, as the country fights to flatten the curve.
