Yesterday evening the celebration of Hanukkah at the Israel pavilion at EXPO2020 Dubai, saw the first candle lighting performed by Rabbi Levi Duchman. The celebration will last until the 5th of December 2021 where each night a candle will be lit in the Hanukkiah. The ceremony started with speeches from Rabbi Levi Duchman, Ilan Sztulman, head of mission of the Israel consulate, and Nave Shachar, KKL-JNF Director for EXPO and GCC region. The speeches were followed by a performance from Dubai Talmud Torah, mini miracle children choir and Anna RF. Traditional Sufganiyot (the holiday donuts) were distributed to the attendees and the public who attended the ceremony.

Menachem Gantz the Spokesperson of the Israel pavilion said during his speech at the ceremony: “Hanukkah is the festival of light. Our tradition tells us that in each one of us, there is an internal light, which becomes even brighter and with more influence and importance, when we gather together. Each light, once we are united is stronger and more significant.

“We are asked in the time of Hanukkah, not only to share our light with others but also to look for the light that each one of our friends and people around us has. I wish to thank the UAE for giving us the opportunity to look for and find each other's light.” he added.

Rabbi Duchman said: “This is a very exciting evening; Last year we lit the Hanukkiah in the world's tallest building, and now we’re lighting it at the world's largest show. Lighting the Hanukkiah at our pavilion that is without walls and open to everyone, is an invitation to share our light with all participants and visitors of the EXPO2020.”

Shachar concluded: “If we simplify Hanukkah, it’s a symbol of miracles, hope, lights and new beginnings so I feel there’s no better place or time to celebrate those symbols than right here in the UAE, which we’re paving the way with our partners from the UAE for new beginnings, we’re hoping for a better tomorrow together for us and for our children.”
