The Ministry of Commerce and Investment of Saudi Arabia recalled over 70,000 'energy hungry' household electrical appliances during the current year. The move comes after thousands of such appliances were found to eat up energy over and above the specified energy efficiency sticker on the appliance.

According to reports in Saudi Gazette, several brands of air-conditioners, refrigerators, freezers and washing machines were recalled as they were not in conformity with the energy efficiency specifications. These appliances were likely to cause a rise in electricity consumption thereby raising consumer's electricity bill.

The ministry has urged consumers to first verify the serial number of the product via the website of the Center for Recalling Products Not in Conformity with Specifications. Following that, they are required to contact the companies and agents so as to withdraw the product and get cash refunds or replacement.

This move comes in accordance with joint efforts of the Ministry of Commerce and Investment, Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO), and the Saudi Center for Energy Efficiency to encourage consumers to use energy saving electrical appliances, reducing power wastage and rationalizing consumption.
