Riyadh: Saudi Telecom Company (STC) and Swedish telecom equipment maker Ericsson on Tuesday inked an agreement to launch a mid-band fifth generation (5G) network in Saudi Arabia.

Under the deal signed on the sidelines of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) fair 2019 in Barcelona, STC will deploy a 5G network using Ericsson commercial hardware and solutions including radio access network (RAN), packet core, transport, and Ericsson Network Manager, Arabian Business reported.

The kingdom unveiled the largest 5G commercial release in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), alongside launching an additional 400 megahertz (MHz) in mid-band (3.5 gigahertz (Ghz)) spectrum to commercial operators in March.

Over 1,000 Mhz total spectrum will be available for mobile services, while nearly 10,000 5G base stations will provide Saudi customers with wide-range 5G coverage at the fastest speed.

“5G holds an immense potential for driving industry digitization and pioneering innovation,” Ericsson’s head for the Middle East and Africa region Rafiah Ibrahim said.

It is noteworthy that Saudi Electricity Company’s (SEC) Dawiyat Integrated Telecommunications and Information Technology on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understating (MoU) with Nokia to develop 5G network in the kingdom.
