DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – International research and education leaders will come together today to discuss the accessibility and visibility of research in the MENA region.

The free symposium Towards a more knowledgeable world: Open Access research in MENA is being held during the annual global Open Access week. It will consist of a series of talks by leading regional stakeholders and global organisations about the implementation and benefits of open research practices.

Kamran R. Kardan, Founder and CEO at Knowledge E says providing Open Access research can unlock countless benefits and opportunities to scholars, scientists, and institutions across the Middle East and Africa.

“Traditionally scientific research is trapped behind paywalls or requires university-facilitated access which creates barriers for people, especially those from lower- income countries and individuals not affiliated to larger organizations. In order to fuel the knowledge economy in the region, quality research needs to become more accessible to everyone.”

This event will provide effective strategies and useful tips for governments, higher education institutions, and individual researchers. A panel of experts from global organisations including Crossref, Harvard University, Open Access Directory and ORCiD will be contributing to the event as well as speakers from leading regional stakeholders including:

  • Bakheet Beshtawy, Dubai Health Authority
  • Milan Vasilijevic, Qatar National Library
  • Natasha Mansur, Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi Foundation for Policy Research

Topics covered will include how and where to find Open Access resources, how research libraries can engage with Open Access and evaluate its effectiveness, the practicalities surrounding publishing Open Access for educational and government institutions, and the value, validity, and impact of Open Access research for scholarly communications.

The five-hour symposium will be held on 28th October 2021 at 2:00 pm (GMT+4). To learn more about the programme and register, please click here
