BEIRUT: Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh expected Wednesday a retreat in the Lebanese pound's rate against the dollar once new proposals are studied.

However, the governor did not disclose the nature of these measures.

Salameh made this statement after meeting with caretaker Finance Ministter Ghazi Wazni.

The Finance Minister of in the caretaker government Ghazi Wazni discussed with Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh all financial and monetary issues, the Finance Ministry said in a statement.

"I met with Minister Wazni and presented to him some proposals that he will study as well as the Central Council of the Banque du Liban during the next 24 hours. We believe that these proposals will lead to a decrease in the exchange rate of the dollar in Lebanon, Salameh told reporters.

Early Wednesday, the pound retreated slightly against the dollar on the black market, trading at LL14,100, as the standard of living in the crises-stricken country continues to deteriorate.

Exchange dealers were selling the dollar for LL14,200 and buying it for LL14,000 on the black market, compared to Tuesday's record low of LL15,100.
